5 Writing Contest Opportunities for 2018

The excitement of entering a writing competition is something every writer should experience at least once. If you’ve never entered a writing contest and are looking for opportunities to fit your writing style, here are 5 competitions you can choose from in 2018. 1. CDS Documentary Essay Prize in Writing

The competition is brought to you by Duke University. Their Center for Documentary Studies Essay Prize celebrates the best work of literary non-fiction. Winners receive a cash prize of $3,000 as well as a feature in the CDS’ digital publication and a place in the Archive of Documentary Arts.

The judging panel welcomes any non-fiction submissions, from essays to journalism, and any other form of creative nonfiction. Your work must be between 4,000 to 6,000 words and accompany an entry fee of $40.

2. Mslexia Women’s Fiction Awards – Short Story Competition

Winning this contest could land you a lucrative publishing deal. Mslexia is a quarterly publication focused on assisting women writers in advancing their skills and progress with their writing career. It’s no surprise that they’re competition is the largest women’s-only contest of the year.

Their Novella competition launches in 2018 with the winner receiving a cash prize of £5,000 and a retreat away with the editor. Your submission needs a word count of between 300 and 3000 words and will cost you a £10 entry fee.

3. The White Review Short Story Prize

Founded in 2013, this contest launched with support from the Jerwood Charitable Foundation. The competition has expanded to include entrants from the U.S, Canada, UK, and Ireland. The competition is open to all genres, with no restrictions on subject or theme, the focus being on recognizing and rewarding “ambitious, imaginative and innovative approaches to creative writing.”

A £15 entry fee for your 2,000 to 7,000 manuscript will put you in the contest with a chance to win a cash prize of £2,500.

4. Nature and Place Poetry Competition

The Rialto’s poetry competition is well known for both its theme and its reward. The contest invites poetry submissions detailing any aspect of nature and place.

Winners of the competition receive a, £1, 000 in cash and enjoy a private tour with Mark Cocker, celebrated nature writer, and Nick Davies, a leading ecology professor. There’s a £6 entry fee, and you’re limited to 40-lines with your submission.

5. The Free Entry Option – The Weekly Reedsy Contest

Why not enter a writing competition this week? Reedsy launches a new short story competition every Friday to their subscribers. Sign up for free at Reedsy.com and join their mailing list. The weekly contest asks Reedsy members to write a short story based on one of 5 different themes sent out in the guideline attached to the weekly email.

The winner receives a $50 cash prize, and their work features in their Medium blog, where its seen by thousands of unique visitors every day.
